Roberts pips Garcia for a magnificent Mugello pole

The American will start the Italian GP from pole position alongside Garcia and Lopez as Aldeguer misses qualifying

After a dramatic qualifying at the Gran Premio d’Italia Brembo, Joe Roberts (OnlyFans American Racing Team) will start on pole position on Sunday after a late lap to claim a new lap record. The #16 continues to battle for the World Championship against Sergio Garcia (MT Helmets – MSI), who will start from second on the grid – lining up an exciting grid for the Italian GP. Garcia set a great time early on which would stand the test of time ahead of MB Conveyors SpeedUp’s Alonso Lopez, who rounds out the front row in third after he found time on his penultimate flying lap.

Key contenders missing

It was an intense Q1 session with the top four being decided in the final minutes, with Jeremy Alcoba (Yamaha VR46 Master Camp Team) ending the session on top, and earning a stop in Q2 alongside Liqui Moly Husqvarna Intact GP’s Darryn Binder, Marcos Ramirez (OnlyFans American Racing Team), and Zonta Van Den Goorbergh (RW-Idrofoglia Racing GP). However, there would be drama before Q2 got underway with Fermin Aldeguer (MB Conveyors SpeedUp) announcing that he would not take part in Q2 and would be reviewed ahead of the Moto2™ race.

Once track action resumed for Q2, Garcia would be fastest in the early stages – setting a 1:49.955 early on. Roberts found time in the last two minutes to jump to second and set a new lap record after a stunning performance by the American. During the last minute, Lopez would also find time, pushing Manuel Gonzalez (Gresini Racing Moto2™) off the front row of the grid.

Q1 graduates shine

Heading the second row of the grid in fourth position will be Gonzalez, who set a 1:50.248 after a sensational qualifying at Mugello. It was a strong performance from Gonzalez with the #18 starting ahead of Binder, with the latter having an eventful qualifying after battling through Q1 and setting seven fast laps across Q2. Binder will be joined by fellow Q1 graduate Ramirez, with the #24 capping off a great day for the American Racing Team – 0.481s adrift from the top spot.

Team Ciatti Boscoscuro’s Mattia Pasini will start from the third row of the grid after another impressive result from the Italian. Behind Pasini was Somkiat Chantra (IDEMITSU Honda Team Asia) in eighth, with Aron Canet (Fantic Racing) rounding off the third row of the grid. However, some big names will start further back, such as Catalan GP podium finisher Jake Dixon (CFMOTO Inde Aspar Team) starting from 15th ahead of Aldeguer, who will start from 18th if he races on Sunday.

The next up is the Moto2™ Italian GP which will take place on Sunday at 12:15 local time (UTC +2), so make sure you don't miss any of the action on motogp.com!
